U2 Tract

Can all world religions really coexist? Does it matter what you believe? Does your belief make it true? Imagine having to jump from an airplane that was about to crash. If you had three possible items to strap to your back, which would you choose: a tire, a briefcase full of money, or a parachute? There is only one right answer that can save your life. That is why all religions cannot coexist. They each give different ideas about God, but only one is true! Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (Jn. 14:6) He made an exclusive claim. Either it is true or it is not. God the Father verified this truth by raising Christ from the dead after His crucifixion. This proves that His words are true and that He is God. Have you lied, stolen, lusted, or taken His name in vain? The Bible warns that we are sinners and deserve the wrath of God. If you will repent (turn away from sin) and trust in Christ alone for salvation, He will credit you with His righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21). Give your life and allegiance to Christ alone.

God Loves God Hates

Does God love you or hate you? Many people say that God loves them however the Bible says that the way God loves you is that He sent Jesus. 1 John 4:9-10 In this the love of God was made manifest among us that God sent His only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. God loves you in that He killed and poured out His wrath on Jesus. When you reject Jesus you reject any love God has for you. You may not reject Him verbally but do you reject Him by your life? Do you lie, steal, lust, or use His name in vain? Psalm 11:5 says God hates the wicked. Apart from Jesus, God's wrath remains on you. Think about that for a second... That is why you can never separate God's love from a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is reading His Word daily and obeying Him. Decide now if you will be loved by God or if you will experience His hatred in the Lake of Fire forever. Repent (turn away from sin) and trust in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

 Dragon-themed tract

The book of Job describes a creature known as Leviathan. It is a creature of “mighty strength” with “teeth of terror.” “His back is made of rows of shields…His sneezings flash forth light…Out of his mouth go flaming torches; sparks of fire leap forth. Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke…His breath kindles coals, and a flame comes forth from his mouth” (Job chapter 41).
Many different countries have ancient pictures and statues of these beasts known as dragons. There is also folklore telling stories of knights battling fire-breathing dragons during the times of the Dark Ages.
It is difficult to say for sure whether these creatures really existed, but it is worth noting that God is very creative. The book of Job describes another creature known as Behemoth which eats grass, whose tail is stiff like a cedar tree (Job chapter 40). Many Christian scientists believe this to be a dinosaur, possibly a brontosaur. It sparks the imagination to visualize these and other amazing animals. Think of the other remarkable creatures we see today like the blue whale, the bombardier beetle, the giraffe, and the earthworm. God is creative and the Bible speaks about His eternal power.
The Bible also speaks of another subject. It tells us how we became separated from God because of our sin, and how we can be reconciled to Him through repentance and faith in His Son Jesus Christ. Below is the gospel. Please read it with an open heart.

The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both. It is he who made us, and we are his. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
For no one living is righteous before you. For there is no one who does not sin.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.
The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What man can live and never see death? Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all...He was buried...he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you, if you return to him. Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out.

Matrix-themed tract

In the movie, “The Matrix,” Neo is remembered for quoting this famous line. He realized that he was living in a dream world. The Matrix was a computer program that kept humans under control until they were eventually killed by artificial intelligence.

In a way this movie is not far off from describing our reality. Satan is the father of this world and the Bible describes him as prowling around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. He uses this world to distract people and keep them happy until one day they will have to answer to God on judgment day. The world we live in now is only temporary, but there is a spiritual world that we will not see until we die.

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12). We see only part of true reality now on this earth. Are you ready to see God face to face when you die? The Bible says “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Will God see you as His child or His enemy?

If you have ever told a lie you would be a liar in God’s eyes. If you have ever stolen anything He sees you as a thief. If you have ever lusted after someone He sees you as an adulterer of the heart. If you have ever hated someone He sees you as a murderer. If you have ever taken God’s name in vain you are a blasphemer. God does not reward lawbreakers; He must punish all sinners.

The Bible says the punishment for doing such things is hell for eternity (Romans 6:23, 1 Corinthians 6:9, Revelation 21:8).

But, “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). Just as Neo was set free from the deception to see reality for the first time, God promises to bring regeneration through His Spirit to those who repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus lived a perfect life and died on the cross taking our punishment upon Himself; Then He rose from the grave. Repent (turn away from the sin in your life) and turn to Jesus Christ. “And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me’” (Luke 9:23). To have saving faith in Jesus Christ means to be born again. “And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments” (1 John 2:3). Please trust in Jesus today. Today is the day of salvation!

Catholic Tract

Mediatrix in Roman Catholic Mariology refers to the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a mediator in the salvation process. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediatrix)

The Bible

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” 1 Tim. 2:5

Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Fathers of the Eastern tradition call the Mother of God "the All-Holy" (Panagia), and celebrate her as "free from any stain of sin, as though fashioned by the Holy Spirit and formed as a new creature." By the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long. [493]

The Bible

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” Rom. 5:12

“If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” 1 Jn. 1:10

Catechism of the Catholic Church

As St. Irenaeus says, "Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race. [494]

The Bible

“And there is salvation in no one else [Jesus], for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Hence they [men] could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it. [846]

The Bible

“For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” Rom. 10:13

Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Church's relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day." [841]

The Bible

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” Jn. 14:6

Catechism of the Catholic Church

No one can merit the initial grace which is at the origin of conversion. Moved by the Holy Spirit, we can merit for ourselves and for others all the graces needed to attain eternal life, as well as necessary temporal goods. [2027]

The Bible

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Eph. 2:8, 9

“For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.” Gal. 1:11, 12

The gospel is simple. We all sin when we do things like lie, steal, and have lustful thoughts. God must punish us (lawbreakers) in hell to uphold justice. Christ paid the price in full on the cross. Salvation is available to all who forsake their sin and trust in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ alone for salvation. Jesus said, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Jesus did not say you must be baptized, go to confession, or attend church. The thief who was crucified with Jesus did not have the chance to do anything but call out in repentance and faith and Jesus told him he would be in Paradise that day. When you repent and trust Christ, His Spirit will enter you and give you new desires. You will live for Him, not to earn salvation, but because you love Him and cherish what He did for you on the cross. He wants a relationship with you. Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation!                                                                                             Please find out what Catholicism really teaches: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM

Scripture tract

The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver.

You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you. You shall not murder. And you shall not commit adultery. And you shall not steal. And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife…desire your neighbor’s house…or anything that is your neighbor’s.

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God; All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.

Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. …Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person-though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die-but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God...just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Tract for Christians who question our methods of evangelism

WE HANDED YOU THIS TRACT BECAUSE WE NEVER WANT TO ARGUE ABOUT HOW TO SHARE THE GOSPEL IN FRONT OF THE LOST.
This tract is for the Christian who might disagree with our methods… Here are a few of the objections we hear from our brothers and sisters in Christ as we witness… along with Scripture.

“You need to earn the right to share the gospel with them. Become their friend first.  You know, like Paul did when he said be a Jew to the Jews…” (show them love)

The right to share the gospel has already been earned, Christ paid that price - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Being a murderer to the murderer is way out of context - And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; 1 Corinthians 9:20
In context, just before this, Paul is explaining how the gospel should be free. And that he should be a servant of all. He also explains that he would gladly give up his freedoms and traditions for others. If he was with someone that wouldn’t eat meat, for example, Paul teaches, in context that he’d say something like “salad’s fine, now let me tell you about the Christ”.
They may not have time - And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Hebrews 9:27

“There has to be a better way to do this than to stand up and preach…”
We must preach.  For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!                 1 Corinthians 9:16

Jesus said, “go”.  Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:15,16
Where does faith come from?  So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.  Romans 10:17
How will they know? - How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?  Romans 10:14
Do they hate me because I preach? - Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you [from their company], and shall reproach [you], and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake... Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. Luke 6:22,26

“Don’t tell them they’re sinners… more grace, less law… you can’t judge them…”
The Law brings people to Christ – Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24
The Law helps them understand the sin they should repent of - I had not known sin, but by the law:  Romans 7:7
You’re either condemned or you’re not condemned -  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:18

Here are a few facts:
Every three minutes approximately 360 people die.  They all go somewhere forever.  You can share the gospel in less than three minutes.
It probably took you about three minutes to read this tract. Please Visit: SavedFromWhat.org

Bible Prophecy Tract

You may have heard people say the Bible is full of errors and contradictions. Is this a fact, or are you putting your faith in what others say? Let’s examine the evidence.

The truth is that the Bible is reliable concerning history and archaeology, and it has withstood time. This is shown through numerous archaeological findings including the Dead Sea Scrolls. We have manuscripts less than a hundred years from the originals. This is closer than any other works in history including Plato and Shakespeare. It is a fact that Old Testament manuscripts as old as 250 B.C. predict future events given in the New Testament dated by paleographers around 50-100 A.D. This is roughly a 300-year gap between the prophecies and their fulfillment, and keep in mind these are conservative numbers. For more evidence visit: christiananswers.net and answersingenesis.org

You may think that the fulfilled prophecies are just a coincidence, but the Bible tells the future with 100 percent accuracy. This was investigated further by Peter Stoner in his book Science Speaks. After examining eight of the specific prophecies he concluded that the chances of them being fulfilled by any one man living down to the present time would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. If we took this number of silver dollars and laid them face down on the state of Texas, they would fill the entire state 2-feet deep. Now think of marking one of the coins, stirring the mass of coins together, walking blindfolded into the state, and picking up the marked coin; these are the odds. This is even more staggering knowing that Jesus fulfilled a lot more than eight prophecies. In addition, prophecies are being fulfilled today through the nation of Israel (Jer. 16:14-16).

So if the Bible really is God’s Word, what does it say? Unfortunately it says that we are unrighteous and do not deserve His mercy. God says we must be perfect (Mt. 5:48).

Before you say you are pretty good ask yourself these questions: Have you ever lied, stolen, had lustful thoughts, taken God’s name in vain, disobeyed your parents, hated someone, or been angry? The Bible says when you break God’s laws you must pay the penalty (Rom. 6:23, 1 Cor. 6:9-10). When you sin against an infinite God it requires an infinite punishment and God will punish all lawbreakers in hell forever (Rev. 21:8). We need to be saved! The good news is that God did something. He sent His Son Jesus to live a perfect life and take what we deserved on the cross. Then God raised Him from the dead on the third day defeating death once and for all (Jn. 11:25). God’s justice is fulfilled in the death of His Son while He demonstrates mercy to undeserving sinners like us. Someone had to die because without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins (Heb. 9:22). You must repent (turn from your sins) and trust in Christ alone for salvation. Then read the Bible daily and obey what you read. Christ not only provided a way of salvation, but He wants a relationship with you. You can be reconciled to God today! Live for Him in gratitude for what He did for you. Now is the day of salvation. For more evidence examine Josh McDowell's The New Evidence

You may have heard people say the Bible is full of errors and contradictions. Is this a fact, or are you putting your faith in what others say? The evidence speaks for itself. Mirror Tract

Answer: They both show a reflection. James 1:22-27 encourages us to look at ourselves in the reflection of God’s Law and be doers of the Word. The Ten Commandments is the mirror we use and when we look at ourselves in light of God’s standard we all fall short. Have you ever lied, stolen anything, hated someone (which is murder), lusted (committed adultery), or loved something more than God (a person, money, car)? If we are honest we know we are all guilty. We need to be saved! “Saved from what?” you might ask. The Bible tells us there is judgment coming and all lawbreakers will be punished in hell (Rev. 21:8). However, there is good news. God sent His Son Jesus to live a perfect life and take our punishment. You must repent (turn away from your sins) and put your faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus alone for salvation. Do this now!

Evolution Tract
This is a picture of Europa (one of Jupiter’s moons), one possible place scientists expect to find life in the universe. Our government has invested billions of dollars in space exploration. A large part of that is related to finding life on other planets. Why is this so important? The answer is that there is no explanation for our origins. We cannot explain where we came from so we must find the intelligent life that may have created us and put us here on earth. It sounds like science fiction, but listen to what experts are saying. Richard Dawkins, well known evolutionist and atheist, said, “No one has any idea of how life started.” He also said, "[Within] cells of biochemistry you might find a signature of some sort of designer…that designer could well be a higher intelligence from elsewhere in the universe.” The cell has been discovered to be incredibly complex. Did it come from aliens? If so, where did the aliens come from? Some say they evolved through natural processes, but where is the scientific evidence backing these claims?

Charles Darwin is famous for writing The Origin of the Species (1859) explaining the origin of life through natural processes. In his writings, he included his own criticisms of the theory. He wrote, “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down. But I can find out no such case.” The cell is one that may lead scientists like Dawkins to say we may be designed by intelligence. Dr. E. C. Ashby was a member of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Tech for 30 years. He has been awarded medals for his research. He has lectured at over 100 universities in 14 countries and has published over 280 papers in leading chemistry journals. He writes that the mathematical possibility of forming just one enzyme (alpha chymotrypsin) through the assemblage of amino acids by chance is one in 10 313. One chance in 10 50 is considered by mathematicians to be zero. He concludes, “To suggest that all of the compounds, needed to produce a cell could be formed by chance when the probability of forming just one enzyme by chance is zero, would indeed be an impossible position to defend.” So, did the cell come from aliens? Ashby and other prominent scientists would say something different. It seems that people want to believe in anything, including aliens, rather than acknowledge their creator, God (Rom. 1).

So how do we know who God is? Well, we can see from creation that He exists and we can see from His Word who He is. The Bible says “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (Jn. 1). God became the man Jesus Christ. Why did God become flesh? The Bible says that all have sinned and therefore deserve death (Rom. 3:23, 1 Jn. 1:8-10, Rom. 6:23). Which of God’s laws have you broken: lying, stealing, looking with lust, hatred, murder, dishonoring your parents, taking God’s name in vain, homosexuality, coveting? Just as a judge would punish a lawbreaker on this earth, God must punish all lawbreakers who have sinned against His holy law. The punishment is eternal torment in the lake of fire (Rev. 21:8). What must you do to be saved? “For our sake, He became sin, who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21). Christ died for you and was resurrected from the dead defeating death. Repent (turn from sin, Acts 17:30, 31) and trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord; believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). Then follow after Christ (Luke 9:23-26) and read the Bible daily!

 Not believing in gravity...

Written by John Bensley

We all want to live long, healthy lives. But the fact is, we all die. A statistic I heard once and thought was funny, yet profound, is ten out of ten people die.
The Bible tells us, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" (Hebrews 9:27)
Where are you going after you die? Heaven? Hell? Don't know?
Let's take a quick test to see if you're good enough to go to heaven:
1. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image (Exodus 20:4) Do you have your own views of who God is... something different than what the Bible says? This is called idolatry. This is sin of the imagination. These men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face. (Ezekiel 14:3)
2.  Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain. (Exodus 20:7) Do you use lightly, the name of theOne who gave you your life. Do you use His name as a cussword? Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. (Matthew 12:36) (this is using His name leasurely or flippantly or any way without due respect).
3. Thou shalt not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14) God looks at your heart. Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (Matthew 5:28)
4. Thou shalt not steal. (Exodus 20:15)
5. Thou shalt not bear false witness. (don't lie) (Exodus 20:16)
So, how'd you do? That was only five of the Ten Commandments. If you've broken ONE of them, you've broken them all. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (James 2:10)
Breaking these laws is transgressing them Sin is transgression of the law. For the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23) In other wards, the payment (wages) for breaking these laws (sin) is eternal punishment in hell (death) because we're sinning against an eternal God. Hell is real. And many people go there. Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: (Matthew 7:13)
In case you think you're not a sinner, scripture says: For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) and If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)
Jesus declared: I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes to the Father, but by me. (John 14:6) Also Know that God loves you and doesn't want you to go to hell. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
So, you must repent, that is, turn from your sins once and for all and trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, who was nailed to a cross for your sins. I tell you, no, except you repent, you will all likewise perish. (Luke 13:3)
He was the perfect sacrificial payment. For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Romans 10:9)

Halloween Tract Written by Jen Roderick

“Trick or treat?”  Have you ever received an answer?

Halloween originated as a holiday to celebrate a closeness with the dead and the possibility of hearing from them about the future.  It is still celebrated by many as a religious holiday in worship of pagan nature gods and, in some cases, of Satan.  Some of the rituals performed on this night include sacrifices to these false gods.

You may not think of yourself as superstitious.  Yet, the people Paul found in Athens as told in the Bible's book of Acts did not view themselves in this way, either.  They thought what they were doing was OK.  But they were clearly deceived, believing a lie.

The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising [Jesus] from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. (Eph. 4:17-18) “The righteous shall live by faith.” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.  For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.  (Romans 1:17-21)

When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a wizard or a necromancer, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. (Deut. 18:9-11)  And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. (Deut. 4:19)  They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger. They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never known, to new gods that had come recently, whom your fathers had never dreaded.  You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you, and you forgot the God who gave you birth.  (Deut. 32:16-18)  They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them. (Psalm 106:35-38)

But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.  (Rev. 21:8)

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Because if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
